Sweet & Smokey Chickpeas

This crunchy snacks are packed with plant powered protein and fibre to keep you energized through your fitness activities! Whether you are off to soccer, dance, or hockey these chickpeas two ways are easy to throw into a container and take along! If you like savoury snacks then you’ll love the smokey BBQ spice inspired mix and you have a sweet tooth try the cinnamon and brown sugar. Our favourite way to eat them is to blend the two.

Yield: 5 servings

 Ingredients:

  • 1 540 mL can chickpeas

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 pepper

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 4 tsp oil (divided into 2 tsp and 2 tsp)

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Equipment:

  • Measuring spoons

  • 2 small bowls

  • 2 large bowls

  • Oven

  • Oven mitts

  • Baking tray

  • Spatula

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 400 F and grease a baking sheet.

  2. Open, drain, and rinse the can of chickpeas. Divide them evenly into two bowls.

  3. For the savoury chickpeas: in a small bowl mix the smoked paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

  4. For the sweet chickpeas: in another bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon.

  5. Pour 2 teaspons of oil over each bowl of chickpeas and stir until they’re all evenly coated.

  6. Pour the savoury spice mix over one bowl of chickpeas and stir until chickpeas are evenly coated. Do the same with the cinnamon and sugar mixture for the other bowl of chickpeas.

  7. Spread each bowl of seasoned chickpeas onto the prepared baking sheet.

  8. Bake for 10 minutes. Then, take them out of the oven, stir them around, and bake for another 7-8 minutes.

  9. Let them cool for about 10 minutes before enjoying!
